Best waterfalls to visit in Slovenia
Waterfall hunting is one of our favorite things to do β and Slovenia has no shortage of them!
We have lived and traveled through Slovenia for more than 5 years now, and we have visited multiple waterfalls throughout this time. Weβve been to the famous ones and to others that were so hidden it was hard to even find them on the map.
This article is the result of all of that: we finally made the list of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia!
TOP 9 Waterfalls in Slovenia
Kozjak Waterfall

Location: Kobarid
Price: β¬ 5.00
This magical waterfall is located in the SoΔa Valley, just outside of Kobarid.
What we love about Kozjak Waterfall is that it is super easy to access. You can park in the parking lot just outside of Kamp Lazar (see location here).
From there, it is only a short 20-minute walk until you get to the waterfall. The walk is easy and suitable for anyone.
Since Kozjak is part of a protected area, they charge an entrance fee from the 1st of April until the 31st of October. If you come in the other months, entrance is free since it is the down season.
Kozjak Waterfall is by far one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia. The fall is located inside a cave and it has crystal clear water.

Savica Waterfall

Location: Lake Bohinj
Price: β¬ 4.00 between June and September, β¬ 3.00 for the rest of the year
Savica Waterfall is one of the most famous waterfalls in Slovenia. A lot of its fame comes due to the fact that it is so easy to reach.
Savica Waterfall is located at the end of Lake Bohinj. There is a parking lot right in front and you can also access it by bike, with a tour, or with the Bohinj boat + walk.
Another great thing about Savica is that it is open all year. The best time to visit is during the summer or shoulder seasons because the forest is greener, making the whole landscape even more beautiful!
The walk to Savica takes around 20min and it is quite easy. I wouldn’t even call it a hike… it is mainly a paved road with steps until you reach the waterfall.

PeriΔnik Waterfall

Location: Mojstrana
Price: Free
PeriΔnik is by far the most unique waterfall in Slovenia and one of our favorite places in the country!
It consists of two falls β the first with 16 meters (not visible from the ground) and the second with 52 meters.
The fall itself is already super impressive and can be viewed all the way from the road. However, the most special thing about this waterfall is that you can walk behind it!
The path behind PeriΔnik is only open during the warmer months of the year. They normally close it up during the winter because the water freezes, making it very slippery.
Pro tip: Entrance to PeriΔnik itself is free but the parking on the hut in front (KoΔa pri PeriΔniku) is paid β it costs β¬ 3.00 for a 2h period. However, you can visit it for free if you park here and hike up to the waterfall.
Boka Waterfall

Location: Near Bovec
Price: Free
Boka Waterfall is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Slovenia.
Similar to the previous one, it is also divided into two stages: the first one is 106 meters, and the second is 33 meters high. Together, they make a truly impressive scene.
The best time of the year to visit Boka is during spring, between April and June. During this time of the year, the water is melting from the winter so Boka has the highest water flow.
Towards the end of the summer, the water volume is very reduced. It is still an impressive sight and it is definitely worth a visit any time of the year, but don’t expect it to be as full.
Virje Waterfall

Location: Near Bovec
Price: Free
Virje is a double waterfall with a fairytale vibe to it. Especially if you visit it during the summer, the green turquoise water is so clear that makes it an impressive sight!
Virje is located quite close to Bovec, which is a good and bad thing at the same time. It is good because this makes it super accessible β you can literally walk to the waterfall if you don’t have a car.
The bad side of it is that it gets quite full in the summer since it is so easily accessible. To make sure you avoid that, we recommend going early in the morning.
Swimming in Virje is technically not allowed but a lot of people choose to ignore that during the summer.
Rinka Waterfall

Location: Logar Valley
Price: Free (but you need to pay β¬ 7.00 to enter the valley)
Rinka waterfall is the second-highest waterfall in Slovenia, with one single fall of 105 meters.
It is a very unique waterfall because it is very high but it does not have a very large volume of water.
The best thing about Rinka Waterfall is that it is accessible to almost anyone. There is a parking lot right at the spot and it is only a short 10-minute walk until you get to the waterfall.
There is also a small treehouse that offers not only the best views of Rinka. It’s actually a small coffee shop but you can go up only for the views, if you want.

Martuljek Waterfalls

Location: Gozd Martuljek
Price: Free
Martuljek is the hardest waterfall to reach from this list because you need to hike to it. It is not visible from the side of the road.
The Martuljek hike will take you to both the Lower Martuljek Fall and the Higher Martuljek Fall. Each of them is unique in its own way.
The hike to reach the Lower Martuljek Fall is considered easy. It will take you around 30 minutes to reach the waterfall. From there, the hike gets steeper and harder but in the end, you will reach the Higher Martuljek Fall.
We highly recommend doing this hike in Slovenia, it is one of our favorites because you get incredible views while hiking through the forest most of the time (which is really nice during the summer!).

Ε um Waterfall

Location: Vintgar Gorge
Price: Free
This impressive waterfall is located at the end of Vintgar Gorge. It is like the cherry on top of the walk β you get to see this impressive waterfall once you finish exploring the gorge.
However, you can also visit Ε um even if you won’t be going to Vintgar Gorge. It is located on the outside part of the park after you exit the paid walk, so it is free to visit.
Make sure you see Ε um Waterfall from below and also from the top! Both spots offer very unique sights.
Ε unik Water Grove

Location: Lepena Valley
Price: Free
Ε unik is not the name of one waterfall, but rather of a little valley where multiple waterfalls are formed.
This is a hidden gem of the SoΔa Valley, a lot of people miss it!
Ε unik is located a few minutes drive away from Velika Korita (the Great SoΔa Gorge). You should park the car in this parking lot and from there, you will see the path starting in the corner.
The path along the grove is very easy to follow and is suitable for kids as well. It is a short loop walk that will take you along the river.
On the way, you will see many different waterfalls and water pools being formed. It is incredibly beautiful! We were there this summer and were really impressed with it!

Can you swim in the waterfalls in Slovenia?
All of the waterfalls we listed above are part of protected areas, which means swimming is not allowed.
However, there are many other places where you can swim, including rivers and smaller waterfalls around the country.
Best time of the year to visit Slovenian waterfalls
Late spring and the start of summer are the best times of the year to visit waterfalls in Slovenia. This is because the melting snow and popular summer showers make the water flow very high.
At the end of summer, the volume of water in the waterfalls decreases drastically if there is no rain. They are still beautiful nonetheless but might be less impressive than earlier in the year.
