Rent a car in Portugal

If you want more freedom when defining your travel itinerary through Portugal, we strongly recommend renting a car. If you do not have a European Driving License, then you should present your original license accompanied by an International Driving Permit. Have in mind that many rental companies may not request to see your international permit, as it is the driver’s responsibility to be aware and compliant with the law if they are pulled over. That being said, we never had issues when driving in Portugal with either the EU or Brazilian driving licenses. Travel insurance

When traveling to Portugal from abroad, it is always important to have international travel insurance. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is accepted for emergencies in public institutions, but it does not apply to every situation. To make sure you are covered, especially when practicing adventure sports such as surfing, climbing, or hiking, it is of utmost importance to have good international travel insurance to travel worry-free. SafetyWing is the company we use to get our own travel insurance and the only one we can truly recommend.

Booking a flight to Portugal

The largest airports in Portugal for cross-continental flights are Lisbon (LIS) and Porto (OPO). If you are booking flights within Europe, you may have other options of accessible airports, for instance, the main airport in Algarve called Faro (FAO). If you will be flying to the Portuguese islands of Madeira or the Azores, we recommend considering a stop-over in Lisbon so you have more options for flights and connections.
