Slovenia is a country that can be visited any time of the year, but each season has something different to offer.
The best time to visit Slovenia will depend on your interests and your travel style. If you are a fan of outdoor adventures, my recommendations will be very different than if you are looking for a peaceful getaway with snow-capped mountains.
Since we live in Slovenia, we have experienced it in every season, so we put together this guide with our personal recommendations.

Before we jump in, let me first give you an overview of the different seasons to help you decide when is the best time for you to visit Slovenia.

Best time to visit Slovenia
The best time of the year for your trip to Slovenia will depend on what you want to see and do once you get here. So, to help you out, we have separated our recommendations based on different travel interests:
- Best time to visit for outdoor activities: May & June – During these months, the weather is ideal for outdoor activities of all kinds, including hiking, rafting, climbing, and much more.
- The best time to visit for going to the beach: July & August – These are the busiest months because it is high season, but it is also the time when the weather is the warmest and you will be able to enjoy beach days the most. To escape the crowds a bit, you can opt for September instead.
- Best time to visit to see fall colors: October – This is the ideal month for observing fall colors. In October, the forests are usually all yellow and orange, and most of the hiking trails are still open.
- Best time to visit for wine tasting: You can go wine tasting all year round, but summer is a special time of the year because there are a lot of festivals going on. It is our favorite time of the year for visiting wineries in Slovenia because the grape vines are still full since the picking season is Autumn, which makes for incredible landscapes.
- Best time to visit for skiing: January & February – Even though most ski stations open in December, the conditions get better in January and February. This is the perfect season for a winter getaway in the mountains.
Visiting Slovenia in each month of the year
Best time of the year to visit Ljubljana
As the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana is one of the busiest destinations in the country. It is located right in the center of the country, so it has average temperatures of 17 to 30oC during the summer and -2 to 5oC during the winter.
For us, the best time of the year to visit Ljubljana is during the months of May, June, or September.
During these months, there are a lot of events happening in the city, including free evening festivals, concerts, and events for kids.
Since it is the shoulder season, the city isn’t yet too full during these months, which is a great thing. During the peak of summer (July and August) it can get too hot to be in the city. With this weather, you are better off exploring somewhere in nature.
Best time of the year to visit Bled
Lake Bled is the most popular attraction in Slovenia, so it gets busy in all months of the year. However, it is the busiest between June and August.
Since Bled is located next to the mountains, the average temperature is a bit lower than Ljubljana’s. The average temperatures in Bled range between 13 and 25oC during the summer and -5 and 3oC during the winter.
Considering all this, the best months of the year for visiting Bled are September and October in our opinion. You will still see the incredible lush green landscapes in the month of September, and in October you can witness the views turning orange as fall settles in. It is a magical time of the year.
Best time of the year to visit the Slovenian seaside
When we talk about the seaside, we are assuming you are looking for a beach destination. In this case, the best time of the year to visit Slovenia would be during the summer, from June to September.
My personal favorite would be September, but if you don’t mind it being busy, July and August are the warmer months of the year here in Slovenia.

What is the rainiest month in Slovenia?
September and October are the rainiest months of the year in Slovenia in general. In recent years, October has typically been worse in terms of rain, in September you can still get days with very nice weather for enjoying outdoors.
What is the worst month to visit Slovenia?
As I said at the start, you can visit Slovenia all year round and find different options for things to do depending on the season. But, if you have flexibility on your schedule, I would avoid coming to Slovenia in November or April because these are the most unpredictable months in terms of weather.
November is a very grey month. Mornings are extremely foggy and the weather is often cloudy. In April, the weather is Russian roulette: some years it is great and full-on spring, in others, we get snow.
I recommend picking a date between May and October to make sure you have better chances of good weather during your trip. If you are looking for winter activities, the best time to visit Slovenia is between December and February instead.
