Vintgar Gorge is one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia. Since it is located right next to Bled, these two combined are the perfect day trip combination.
As someone who has lived and traveled through Slovenia for the past 5 years, I can say that I still get impressed by the views whenever I visit Vintgar Gorge, just as if it were my first time.
In this guide, I will cover everything you need to know to plan the perfect visit to Vintgar Gorge.

About Vintgar Gorge
As the name suggests, Vintgar Gorge is a beautiful gorge located in the Triglav National Park. The river passing through the gorge is called the Radovna River and it has the most mesmerizing turquoise color.
During this section of the river, the gorge formed gets quite narrow, creating the perfect landscape.
To explore the gorge, you will walk along wooden pathways that cross the river from one side to the other.

Here is the basic information you need to know before going to Vintgar Gorge:
- Total distance: 1.6 km one way
- Duration: You can count on spending at least 1 hour and 30 minutes to go one way (this could be more depending on stops along the way)
- Difficulty level: Easy, can be done with kids

- Accessibility: The path has steps and is narrow, so I wouldnβt say it is accessible for wheelchairs, unfortunately
How to get to Vintgar Gorge
Since most people visit Vintgar Gorge as a day trip from either Bled or Ljubljana, I will give you recommendations for both options separately:
Going to Vintgar Gorge from Bled
Vintgar Gorge is located only 5 km away from Bled, so it is very easy to go from one place to the other. These are the transport options available:
- By car: This is the fastest option, it will take you only 10 minutes, but you will have to park outside the visitor center, and take the suttle bus.
- By bus: There is a free shuttle bus from Bled to Vintgar Gorge. Check all the info about this bus here.
- By bike: There are a few places in Bled where you can rent a bike and cycle to Vintgar Gorge. The ride should take a maximum of 20 min each way. You can also rent an e-bike on GetYourGuide or Viator.
- Walking: You can also walk from Bled to Vintgar Gorge. There is an established and well-marked walking path that is 4.4 km long. It should take you approximately 1h each way.
Going to Vintgar Gorge from Ljubljana
Vintgar Gorge is located almost 60 km away from Ljubljana, so it is an ideal destination for a day trip. Here are the transport options from Ljubljana:
- By car: The ride will take you 45 minutes
- By tour: There are many options for day trips from Ljubljana to Vintgar Gorge – this is the one we recommend the most.
- By bus: The best option will be to get a bus to Bled and from there, take the free shuttle. Buses from Ljubljana to Bled depart from the main bus station every hour – check the timetable here.

Ticket prices for Vintgar Gorge
Tickets can be bought directly at the official VINTGAR Hub (Central Parking VINTGAR LIP) before boarding the VINTGAR Shuttle.
This is the price breakdown for the 2026 season:
- Adult: β¬ 15
- Children 3-15 years: β¬ 5
- Pets: β¬ 3
Itβs important to note that the park doesnβt advise children under 3 years old to visit. I assume it is because the path can be slippery, and even though it has handrails, I wouldnβt say they are small-kids-proof.
But you know your kids better than anyone, so you know their limits.
Parking prices in Vintgar Gorge
The parking rules at Vintgar Gorge changed recently. You can’t park next to the entrance anymore. Now, the closest parking is the Vintgar central parking area LIP. From there, you can hop on an e-shuttle that runs every 7 minutes. The parking and e-shuttle use is included in the price.
You should make sure to arrive at the parking lot early enough to meet your reserved spot on the ticket. The shuttle ride to the gorge takes around 20 minutes. On the official website they recommend to arrive at least 45 minutes before your visit time.
Vintgar Gorge: opening times and season
Vintgar Gorge is not open all year round, they close for the winter season. The exact opening months vary a little every year because it depends on the weather.
In 2026, Vintgar Gorge will be open from April until late October/start of November.

Important things to know
Here are some things you should consider before visiting Vintgar Gorge:
The path is one-way
Since the pandemic, they have changed the dynamic of the visit through Vintgar Gorge. Now, the path is only one way.
To go back, you have to walk back through one of the alternative paths or take a taxi.
There are two different return routes:
- Alpine Vintgaring β King of Triglav Trail: This return route takes you through a sunny Alpine cultural landscape with historical context and pastoral traditions. Itβs best in the morning or late afternoon, and the full loop (gorge + return) is 5.7 km.
- Forest Vintgaring β River of Trees Trail: This return route winds through a lush, shaded forest where you can learn about protected, diverse plant and animal life. Itβs ideal in the middle of the day, and the full loop (gorge + return) is 4.3 km.
Make sure you wear good walking shoes
The walking path on Vintgar Gorge is always wet and slippery, so we highly recommend wearing good walking shoes.
If you choose to walk back through the forest trail, hiking shoes would be the best fit. However, the route is easy to follow so you can get by with regular tennis shoes as well.
Helmets are mandatory
Since 2025, they implemented a rule that makes it mandatory to wear helmets in the gorge. You can pick up your helmet at the Vintgar visitor center. Make sure to bring that helmet back, otherwise you will be charged 50β¬ for the loss of the helmet.
The busiest times are between 10 and 13h
Vintgar Gorge is one of the most popular attractions in Slovenia, so it should come as no surprise to you that it gets quite busy.
To avoid the crowds, go in the early morning or late afternoon.
Pro tip: Even though these are the best times based on the crowds, for photographers, the best time to visit Vintgar Gorge is at midday because of the lighting. The gorge gets really narrow at times so the middle of the day is the only time when it gets enough sunshine coming in to really make the water color really stand out. However, taking the perfect shot at this time will be a patience game.
Visiting Vintgar Gorge: how the visit works
First, you come to the official VINTGAR Hub (Central Parking VINTGAR LIP) and buy your tickets. You can and are recommended to buy your tickets online, though. You can buy them here.
On the other hand, I personally like the option of buying the ticket on-site because this is the type of attraction that you want to wait for a day with good weather to visit. I appreciate the flexibility.
Once you have your ticket, you will board the shuttle to the visitors’ area. After you enter, you go straight to the wooden pathways. It will take you from one side to the other in the gorge. The start is in a darker section of the gorge, with limited natural light coming in, but it gradually clears up as the gorge slowly opens up.Β
There are a few falls and pools along the way, creating really beautiful views. Make sure you take the time to take it all in.
Don’t forget to look up to see the stone arch bridge of the Bohinj railway. In the end, you can see the beautiful Ε um Waterfall. It is worth climbing down to see it from the front.
Once you reach the end, you will have to pick between the green or red paths or call a taxi to bring you back.
Best time to visit Vintgar Gorge
The best time of the day to visit Vintgar Gorge is in the morning or late afternoon.
The gorge gets quite busy between 10 h and 13 h. Even though it is the most beautiful time for photography lovers because of the sunshine coming through the rocks, it can get a bit chaotic.
I recommend the morning time, especially if you will be visiting during the high season.

Can I bring my dog to Vintgar Gorge?
Yes, dogs are allowed in Vintgar Gorge, but you will also need to pay an entry ticket for it. Tickets for pets cost β¬ 3,00.
Is it worth booking a tour to visit Vintgar Gorge?
Visiting Vintgar Gorge on a guided tour is a good option if you donβt want to plan the visit by yourself. Since Vintgar Gorge is a bit isolated, some people donβt like to plan the walk or the bus required to get you there.
If this sounds like you, then booking a tour may be the perfect solution! The tour company will take care of all the logistics and will arrange pick-up at the end of the trail, so you wonβt have to worry about walking back.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance to visit Vintgar Gorge?
You can buy your tickets online in advance if you want. This is recommended if you will be visiting during the peak season, especially during the busy hours of the middle of the day.
However, if you plan on going to Vintgar Gorge during alternative times, buying the ticket on site shouldnβt be a problem. I, personally, bought the ticket directly at the entrance on all my past visits.
