Visiting the Slovenian Coast: Best towns and beaches
Slovenia may be a small country, but it has no shortage of picturesque and cozy coastal towns. The coastline is only 47 km long, but it has some of my favorite destinations in the country.
The seaside is where Slovenian and Italian cultures meet since this region of the country has been part of the Venetian Republic in the past. In fact, this region has two official languages: Slovenian and Italian, as you will notice on the signs along the road.
We live in Ljubljana, only a short drive away from the Slovenian coast, so we visit this region a few times every year during the summer. In this article, weβll guide you through our favorite spots and things to see on the Slovenian coast.
Piran

Piran is our favorite Slovenian coast town. It does not have the best beaches, but it is the most cultural and historical city. Walking along the narrow alleys feels like a step back in time.
Make sure you spend some time visiting the Old Town. Notice the resemblance to the Venetian architecture and style on the cityβs buildings.
The main spots you should visit in Piran are:
- Tartini Square, the main square of Piran, is named after the famous violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini. One of the most important buildings in the square is the Venetian House
- Piran promenade with all the statues made by local artists – pay attention to the mermaid one, it is the most famous
- Piran town walls
- St. George’s Parish Church and the Bell Tower (which is almost a replica of the campanile in Venice)
Portoroz

Located right next to Piran, Portoroz offers quite a different atmosphere. Instead of the historical buildings, here you can expect to find luxury and relaxation.
This is the Slovenian coast town known for its spas and beachfront resorts.
Portoroz also has quite an extensive beach, which makes it a very popular spot during the summer.
Izola

Izola will catch your attention with its mix of historical sites and a laid-back maritime vibe. The marina is perfect for a sunset walk, and the remnants of the old fishing town add a rustic charm to your visit.
Our favorite thing about Izola is that it is quite small and cozy, keeping its authenticity. As you will find out later, Izola is also home to one of our favorite beaches on the Slovenian coast.
Pro tip: If you are in the mood for a dessert, get yourself a gelato from SlaΕ‘ΔiΔarna Izola on your way home! You wonβt regret it.
Koper

Koper is the largest port in Slovenia, so you can imagine how important this area is to the countryβs economy. However, because of the port, it is not my favorite destination to go for a beach day.
The Old Town of Koper is definitely worth a visit, though. Make sure you check the Praetorian Palace and Tito Square for the most incredible architectural spots in the city.
Natural and cultural attractions on the Slovenian coast
Sloveniaβs coastal charm is not only attributed to the towns. Au contraire!
The seaside also offers many cultural and natural attractions. Letβs dive into our favorite ones.
SeΔovlje and Strunjan Salt pans

Did you know that the Slovenian coast is known for its salt production?
The SeΔovlje and Strunjan Salt pans are some of the oldest in Europe, and they are still preserving the old traditions. They have been making salt the same way for over 700 years!
This is a very interesting thing to see on the Slovenian coast because you get to learn something new while visiting such a beautiful location on the seaside. The salt pans are located right next to the water, creating some of our favorite views.
Marezige wine fountain
Another staple of the Slovenian culture is winemaking. This region has some of the best wineries in the country, so if you are a wine lover, make sure to save some time on your itinerary to check them out!
Marezige is a small village located next to Koper that offers something really unique: a wine fountain! You read it right, itβs a fountain where you can top up your wine and sip it while watching the sunset.
Now, just to manage your expectations a bit⦠when I say fountain, I mean that it is like a tap where you can savor the local wine, not like a public fountain where pigeons bathe themselves.
Either way⦠this is a very romantic setting and a great thing to do on the Slovenian coast that is often overlooked by most tour companies.
Lipica Stud Farm

The Lipica Stud Farm is a historical farm established in 1580 and another important attraction of the Slovenian coast.
This farm has the largest number of Lipizzaner horses in the world, which are part of Sloveniaβs heritage. They arenβt found anywhere else.
Best beaches in the Slovenian Coast
Last but not leastβ¦ how could we talk about the coast without talking about beaches? Sloveniaβs coastline may be short, but it does have some incredible beaches to offer.
Here is a short list of my three favorite beaches in Slovenia.
Moon Bay Beach

Moon Bay is considered the most beautiful beach in Slovenia, and it is easy to understand why. This is a secluded beach that can only be reached by foot, with a shape that resembles a crescent moon (hence the name).
The best way to get to Moon Bay beach is by parking your car at Strunjan beach and walking. It will be a short 20-minute hike to the beach. From the path, you will have a viewpoint that grants you the most incredible view over Moon Bay (the exact view you see in the photo above).
Pro tip: Moon Bay is part of the Strunjan National Park, a beautiful protected area that extends along this part of the coast. If you have time, explore the region on foot a bit. There are multiple walking trails around.
Izola Beach

Izola Beach is one of our favorite beaches on the Slovenian coast because you can enjoy the crystal blue waters while sitting in the shadows.
If you have traveled through Croatia and other destinations along the Adriatic Sea, you know how big of a luxury it is to have natural shade by the beach. The heat and the sun can be quite strong during the summer.
Here, in Izola, there is a small park located right behind the beach so you can find a spot for the day in the grass. If you prefer to get some tan in the sun, there is also plenty of space for that too.
Portoroz Beach

Portoroz Beach is probably the most popular beach on the Slovenian coast. It is where most of the local families go to spend a day in the sun during the summer days.
Portoroz Beach is ideal for families. It is a sandy beach with very shallow waters, which makes it quite safe for kids.
Along the promenade, there are a lot of cafes and restaurants where you can go for a drink or a snack after the beach.

Visiting the Slovenian Coast: transport tips
These are the transport options you have for visiting the Slovenian coast:
- Car: The most comfortable and convenient option. We highly recommend renting a car in Slovenia, especially if you will be visiting small villages and remote attractions, such as some of the places suggested in this guide. β Check the car rental prices at Discover Cars

- Bus: There is public transport connecting the main cities on the Slovenian coast. During the summer, the lines are frequent and tickets are quite affordable. However, you must be always attentive to the timetable.
- Tour: If you will not be driving, you can also book a tour to visit multiple locations on the Slovenian coast. We recommend checking Get Your Guide and Viator for the best tour options.
How much time do you need to visit the Slovenian Coast
The best part about the Slovenian coast being short is that you can visit multiple places on the same day. Most locations are only a 15-minute drive away from each other.
How long you will stay in this region depends on how much time you have available on your schedule.
We recommend at least 1-2 full days exploring the Slovenian seaside if you want to visit most locations on this guide and still have some time left to spend by the beach, in the sun.
If you are coming to the Slovenian seaside for a family vacation, though, you can easily spend a whole week here enjoying the beaches and the small coastal towns.

Where to stay at the Slovenian Coast
When you’re planning your vacation to the Slovenian coast, choosing the right place to stay is key to a memorable experience. You’ll find a variety of accommodation options ranging from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels that cater to every preference.
We normally recommend staying in Piran because it is the most charming of all Slovenian coast towns, and it offers great restaurants for dinner and accommodation options. Portoroz is also a great option for a place to stay.
Where to stay in Piran:
1. Hotel Zala Piran: A small and beautiful hotel located just meters away from the main square. This place has a lovely rooftop that guests can enjoy and an incredible breakfast.
2. Hotel Piran: One of the best hotels in Piran. What I like most about this place is the covered patio where you can have breakfast with a sea view in the morning.
Where to stay in Portoroz:
1. Hotel Histrion: Located right by the beach between Portoroz and Piran, this hotel is one of the best on the seaside, offering incredible facilities including swimming pools and a spa.
2. The Sea Lodges Portoroz: Are you looking for a unique place to stay? How about a house on the water? These sea lodges are an incredible alternative, and they feature a hot tub on the top deck β what could be more perfect for a summer day?
