Guide to visiting Savica Waterfall in Slovenia
Savica Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia, and definitely a must-visit when you will be visiting the country.
One of the best things about Savica Waterfall is that the access is really easy. It is a great place to go with families or people who are not into hiking but still want to check out natural spots.
We have lived in Slovenia for years and Savica is one of the places we like to visit during spring, when it is a bit less crowded.
In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to visit Savica Waterfall, including our personal tips to make the visit more pleasant.

Where is Savica Waterfall located?
Savica Waterfall is located in the Triglav National Park, at the end of Lake Bohinj. We have tagged it on the map below to help you get a better idea of its location.
How to get to Savica Waterfall
The easiest way to get to Savica Waterfall is by car, but there are a few other transport alternatives you can consider. I’ll list below the transport options available:
- By car: If you will rent a car for your trip to Slovenia, the easiest way to get to Savica is to simply drive there. There is a parking on site. It costs 4 EUR for 3 hours during the high season, but if you come during the low season, it is free.
- By tour: Many tours of Lake Bohinj include a visit to Savica Waterfall, such as this one for example.
- By bike: You can rent a bike in Bohinj for the day and cycle all the way to Savica. There is a cycling road that accompanies the lake, but you will have to cycle on the side of the road for the last couple of kilometers. It is super safe though, we Slovenians are very used to cyclists on the road.
- Use the boat and walk: If you will be at the start of Lake Bohinj, you can take the boat that crosses to the other side of the lake and, from there, walk to Savica. It is not a hard walk but will add a few kilometers to your overall trip.

Savica Waterfall: Opening days and hours
Savica Waterfall is open all year round. The low season is between October and May and the high season is between June and September.
Regarding opening times, I’ll be very honest and say that the organizers are not very clear about it online.
We were there in April 2024 and at the entrance, it said from 8:15 to 19h.
The trail to reach Savica Waterfall
After you pay for the ticket and enter, the trail to Savica Waterfall will take you up to 20 minutes.
The path is paved, but it is not suitable for a stroller because it consists mainly of steps. It is very easy to follow and a great option also for kids and families.
You don’t even need to wear hiking shoes or special clothes for this trail, even though we do recommend wearing some level of sports clothes since you can expect to sweat on your way up.
After a 20-minute walk, you get to the viewing point where you can see Savica Waterfall on one side and the Bohinj Valley on the other. It is truly a beautiful sight!

Can you swim at Savica Waterfall?
No, this is a protected area. Once you get to the viewing spot, there is a gate blocking the way to the waterfall itself. You can only see it from a distance (as you can see in the picture above, the little path on the left is as far as you can go).
It used to be possible to walk up to the water in the past, but it is quite dangerous because the water flow here can get very strong and the path is very slippery, especially during the winter when it freezes. It’s a bad combination.
As a safety measure, the gate was introduced.
You can, however, get a clear view of the fall once you walk down to the gate.

Infrastructure at Savica Waterfall
Along the way, you will see a few picnic tables that are perfect for a break or an afternoon snack (like the one above). You will have the most beautiful view of the valley below, it is very peaceful.
At the entrance, they also have toilets available and small souvenir shops.
Next to the parking lot, there is a large restaurant that serves a variety of Slovenian dishes. I must say that we found this restaurant quite overpriced and with low quality of food. I would recommend stopping at one of the local restaurants in Bohinjska Bistrica instead.

Best time of the year to visit Savica Waterfall
Savica Waterfall is one of the few natural attractions in Slovenia that is open during all months of the year. Most places close for the winter season because of accessibility.
If you visit Savica Waterfall during the winter, you can expect some parts of the path to be frozen, especially at the viewing point. I have never been there during the winter but it must be a completely different experience.
The best time to visit Savica Waterfall is during the spring. This is the season when the ice melts so the waterfall has the strongest flow of water, resulting in the most beautiful sight.
I personally love the month of May for that.
July and August are the busiest months here. So, if you will be coming during this time, I recommend visiting Savica Waterfall in the early morning or late afternoon.

What’s the best hour to visit the waterfall?
I’ll be visiting it in August and I hope to visit it with the best lighting
Hi Giulia,
Because of its position which is kind of in between the mountains, Savica Waterfall is in the shadow during most of the day. The exception is the middle of the day when the sun is high enough that it comes directly through. If you are asking for photography reasons though, midday is normally not a great time to shoot so we personally like it in the morning even though it will be in the shadow.
Hope this was helpful!
Have a great trip :)
