BULGARIA TRAVEL GUIDE

Bulgaria is a country many will not consider visiting, but that just means they will be missing out. This Balkan gem surprised us by being so young, full of life, and with over-the-top amazing food.
We recommend starting your trip in the capital Sofia, then moving on to the less explored destinations the country has to offer. Extending all the way from the Black Sea to the border of Serbia, Bulgaria is incredibly rich in history and cultural sites.
Let us guide you through the country’s best attractions and rakias.

Rent a car in Bulgaria
If you want more freedom when defining your travel itinerary through Bulgaria, we recommend renting a car. If you do not have an International Driving License (which does not apply to EU citizens), then you may have to present your original license accompanied by an International Driving Permit. Have in mind that many rental companies may not request to see your international permit, as it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure they are within the law. Travel insurance
When traveling to Bulgaria from abroad, it is always important to have international travel insurance. To make sure you are covered in case something goes wrong, or if something happens while you will be hiking or skiing in the beautiful Bulgarian mountains, always double-check if your travel insurance covers all your needs. SafetyWing is the company we use to get our own travel insurance and the only one we can truly recommend.
Booking a flight to Bulgaria
The biggest Bulgarian airport is Sofia Airport (SOF) located on the outskirts of the Bulgarian capital. We would recommend flying to this airport if you wish to explore the western part of Bulgaria. If you wish to visit resorts on the Black Sea, maybe it would be best to fly to Varna Airport (VAR) or Burgas Airport (BOJ).
