Visiting Slovenia in August: What to expect and best things to do
August is one of the busiest months of the year in Slovenia, and that’s because it is the peak of the summer. But that also means it is one of the months with the best weather around here.
We have lived and traveled through Slovenia for over 5 years now and we put together all our best tips to help you visit our country as well. In this article, we’ll show you how Slovenia is in August and the best things to do around here during this time of year.
Weather in Slovenia in August
August in Slovenia is the last full month of the summer season. It is one of the busiest months of the year, we see people coming from all over the world to enjoy the sun and heat.
Temperatures get quite high during August. We normally have beautiful clear days, with the occasional summer storm at the end of the afternoon.

Festival and events happening in August in Slovenia
- Film under the stars: An open-air cinema is set in the Ljubljana Castle with one movie screening each evening. This event usually goes from late July till August and this year, the event will be held from 11 of July to 3 of August. You can check the schedule and get tickets here.
- Roman Games in Ptuj: Every year, the old city of Ptuj holds the XVII edition of their Roman Games. This year it will happen between 16-18 of August.
- Odprta Kuhna: The open kitchen event happens every Friday in the center of Ljubljana. This event brings together some of the best restaurants in town and it is a must-visit!
- Bohinj Night: A musical event that happens every year during the summer in Bohinj. They set up a stage with various artists until 3 am. This year, it will happen on the 10th of August.
- Street Food Market in Maribor: To close off the month, the second largest city in Slovenia will host their international street food market between 29-31 of August.
- Medieval Day at Celje Castle: Visit one of the oldest castles in Slovenia while attending this two-day event that takes you back in time with medieval themes and activities. It is perfect for kids. In 2024, the event will happen on the 30 & 31st of August.
Holidays in August in Slovenia
The 15th of August is Assumption Day, a national holiday in Slovenia. Make sure you take this into consideration when planning your trip.
This year, the 15th of August will be on a Thursday. You can expect stores and supermarkets to be closed on this date.
What to do in Slovenia in August
If I am being honest, you can do almost anything if you will be coming to Slovenia in August.
Since it is the top of the season, all the hikes and attractions are open.
Here are some of our suggestions of things to do that are perfect for the month of August:
1. Go on long hikes
August is a great month to go on hut-to-hut hikes. Shorter hikes tend to get busy since this is the busiest month, so a good way of escaping that and still getting outdoors is to go on longer hikes.
Fewer people tend to go on hut-to-hut hikes, so you can still find a good place. Also, nature will be at its greenest moment this time of the year, so you’ll have the best views!
Pro tip: August is one of the best months to hike Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia!
2. Visit Lake Jasna
This small mountain lake is located very close to Kranjska Gora and it is a fairytale during summer. It is part of the Triglav National Park, the main national park here in Slovenia.
I like going there at the end of the day to cool off. There are a couple of cafes around the lake where you can stop for a drink and enjoy the mountains.
3. Go for a beach day in Izola
It’s summer, so why not spend a day by the beach? Izola has some of our favorite beaches in Slovenia.
What we love about it is that they actually have shadow areas next to the beach. If you’ve traveled around the Adriatic Sea, you know just how rare that is.
With the August heat, you will need some of that shadow. Even though temperatures can get quite high, this is one of the best months to enjoy the sea.

4. Watch the sunset while sipping wine at the wine fountain in Marezige
Here is a bonus tip if you will be spending some time at the seaside in Slovenia this August – in Marezige, there is a wine fountain with sunset views!
You read that right, a wine fountain! Since this is a wine-making region, they have 4 different wines you can taste while enjoying the sunset in the garden. It is a great option of thing to do during the summer.
Costs of visiting Slovenia in August
I won’t lie – August is the peak of the high season in Slovenia, which means the costs are also at their maximum.
Most accommodations raise their price during the high season. If you are looking for a place to stay in popular cities like Bled or Piran, you can expect to pay up to 50% higher prices than in the shoulder season for a place to stay.
The best way to avoid the higher prices is to get accommodation in smaller, not-so-popular cities. For example, instead of staying in the center of Bled, you can get a place in Bohinj or Ribno. Weekday fares tend to be cheaper as well.
Another thing that is important to mention is that many attractions have higher ticket prices during the high season. For example, tickets to the Tolmin Gorge are € 10 in August and only € 6 in the low season.
