Visiting Slovenia in September: all you need to know

September is one of the best months to visit Slovenia. It’s the start of Autumn, the season that brings fall colors to the mountains and a lovely breeze of fresh air after the summer.

September is considered one of the shoulder months in Slovenia. It is significantly emptier than July and August, so it is a very pleasant time to visit.

We have lived and traveled through Slovenia for over 5 years now, so we have experienced it across all seasons. We have put this guide together to help you plan the right things to do when visiting Slovenia in September.

Weather in Slovenia in September

Slovenia is the month that marks the transition from Summer to Autumn. The start of the month is still very warm, with summer-like weather.

Towards the end, it already feels much more like autumn, with a cool breeze in the air.

This is the average temperature in Slovenia in September:

CelsiusFahrenheit
Minimum temperature (avg)15oC59oF
Maximum temperature (avg)25oC77oF

In terms of rain, September is not typically a month known to rain a lot. There could be a few days of rain, but it is normally quite a sunny month.

This, however, has been changing a bit in the past couple of years with the weather getting quite unstable in Europe in general. If you want to increase your chances of getting good weather during your trip, I’d recommend aiming for the start of September.

Pro tip: If you want to see the fall colors in the Triglav National Park, aim to come at the end of September/start of October

September is one of the best months of the year for hiking in Slovenia. The August heat has dissipated but you still have really clear days, which makes for the perfect hiking combo.

Costs of visiting Slovenia in September

As I mentioned, September is considered a shoulder month.

Prices at the start of the month tend to be higher than at the end. That’s because the end of the month is already when everything starts getting quieter in preparation for the down season.

I personally think this is a great month to travel to Slovenia, also in terms of cost. You will be able to visit all the attractions, and it is possible to find some great deals on accommodation prices.

Pro tip: You might find the best fares when booking a stay during weekdays.
