Deciding where to stay in Rio de Janeiro can be quite overwhelming for tourists visiting the city for the first time. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro and still visit the city every single year, so I have put together this guide to help you decide on the right hotel for your trip.

In this article, we’ll walk you through the best areas to stay in Rio de Janeiro, giving our personal recommendations of hotels and insider tips on which neighborhoods we advise NOT staying in on your first visit to the city.

Understanding the main neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro

First things first – let me give you a general guide to the main neighborhoods and areas of Rio de Janeiro.

Rio is divided into zones – South, West, North and Center.

• The South Zone is the main area for tourists, which includes the most known neighborhoods like Copacabana, Ipanema, etc.
• The West Zone is known for its amazing beaches (which are far less crowded than Copacabana and Ipanema). The main neighborhoods are Barra da Tijuca and São Conrado.
• The North Zone is sort of Rio’s suburbs. It is not a very touristy area and does not contain a lot of attractions or places to visit for tourists.
• The Center (or downtown) is the historic part of the city. It is where Rio’s business and financial center is, but it does not contain a lot of residential areas. The most interesting neighborhood for tourists is Lapa.

PS: Rio does not have an East Zone because towards this direction is where we have Guanabara Bay.

Copacabana: The most traditional neighborhood in Rio for tourists

Copacabana is not only one of the most famous neighborhoods in Rio, but it is also one of the oldest parts of town. As a tourist coming to Rio for the first time, you can’t go wrong by staying in Copacabana.

Things I like about staying in Copacabana:

• It has incredible options for hotels, especially for rooftop lovers
• Copacabana Beach is world-famous for a reason
• There are many incredible restaurants in Copacabana
• Copacabana is very well connected to the main attractions of Rio

Copacabana offers a wide range of options from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels. You will want to stay as close to the beachfront as possible because that is where the nicest hotels are. For reference, the avenue that passes by the beach is called Av Atlântica.

• Copacabana Palace – The most luxurious and iconic hotel in Rio de Janeiro, the Copacabana Palace is a five-star haven with beautiful Art Déco architecture.
• Hilton Copacabana – One of my favorite hotels in Copacabana Beach, the Hilton features an incredible rooftop with an amazing view of the entire Copacabana Beach, along with all the first-class facilities that the Hilton chain is known for.
• Aquarela do Leme – A budget-friendly option for a place to stay in Copacabana, this hostel is very well-located and has incredible reviews.

Ipanema: The best place to stay in Rio for beach bums

Even though Copacabana is the most famous neighborhood and usually tourist’s first choice of place to stay, I normally recommend choosing Ipanema instead.

In my opinion, Ipanema has the best of what Rio has to offer:

• Ipanema Beach is far nicer than Copacabana Beach
• If you get a hotel by the beach, you have a first-class view of the most beautiful sunset in Rio
• Ipanema is a very young neighborhood with lots of amazing bars
• You can walk around everywhere in Ipanema

In Ipanema, you will find options of places to stay that range from luxurious to budget-friendly. This neighborhood is home to some of Rio’s best hostels and also the most glamorous hotels.

Here are our top recommendations for places to stay in Ipanema:

• Hotel Fasano – Known to be the place where most celebrities stay while in Rio, the Fasano Hotel is an icon of the city. The rooftop pool has one of the most incredible views of Ipanema.
• Hotel Arpoador – This hotel went through a recent makeover and has since been calling the attention of travelers. One of the best things about staying at Hotel Arpoador is that you have easy access to the amazing restaurant of the hotel.

Leblon: The best place to stay in Rio for high-end travelers

If you are looking for luxury and exclusivity, then Leblon is the place for you. Located right next to Ipanema, this upscale neighborhood offers a quieter and more sophisticated atmosphere.

We often say that Santa Teresa is one of the few neighborhoods in Rio where you can still feel what the city used to be like in its golden days. Staying in Santa Teresa will give you a unique perspective of the city.

• One of the best things about Santa Teresa is that it sits on top of the hill, which means you can have incredible views of Rio and especially the Sugar Loaf
• The neighborhood has a very laid-back atmosphere and a very different energy from the other ones on this list
• Santa Teresa is known for its street art scene and having a more alternative vibe, which I love

What are the safest places to stay in Rio?

Talking about the best areas to stay in Rio and not mentioning safety would be a miss because this seems to be the main concern of first-time visitors.

In my opinion, the safest areas to stay in Rio are:

• Ipanema
• Leblon 

Safety is a very personal thing since it is a feeling each of us has when visiting a place. The main reason why I consider these two to be the safest areas to stay in Rio is because I feel safe walking around in the streets during the day or night. There are always a lot of bars and restaurants, which means there are always people around which is great.

Now, I want to point out that regardless of where you go, you should always be mindful and use basic common sense when it comes to safety. Don’t leave your belongings unattended, don’t walk with your cell phone and camera exposed if you feel unsafe, and don’t wander around in the middle of the night if you don’t know where you are going.

Navigating safety in Rio is not as hard as most of the internet may make it seem. I have taken Edo to Rio multiple times now and he has always felt safe in the city.

Which neighborhoods to avoid staying on your first visit to Rio?

For a first-time visitor, I recommend sticking to the main neighborhoods mentioned above in this post. 

The neighborhoods I would avoid staying at on your visit to Rio are:

• Rocinha
• Vidigal
• Lapa
• Center
• The North Zone

Note: I am not saying you should not visit these neighborhoods, far from that! I think visiting the Center and Lapa, for example, are must-do activities in Rio. But I would not recommend getting a hotel there.

Is it better to stay in Ipanema or Copacabana?

This is a common question among travelers looking for the best areas to stay in Rio. Both Ipanema and Copacabana are iconic neighborhoods known for their beautiful beaches, lively atmosphere, and numerous accommodation options.

Ultimately, it depends on your personal preferences. 

Choose Ipanema if you prefer a younger atmosphere and great sunsets.
Choose Copacabana for great restaurants and the most iconic beach in the city.

Where is the best area to stay in Rio for families?

I personally recommend staying in Ipanema or Leblon if you will be visiting Rio with your family. The main reason is that these neighborhoods are safe and very walking-friendly.

If you are looking for a relaxing holiday with beach-front all-inclusive accommodation, consider the Grand Hyatt at Barra da Tijuca instead.

What is the best place to stay in Rio de Janeiro for nightlife?

Nightlife in Rio happens in many different neighborhoods, depending on what you are looking for.

• Lagoa and Gávea are where the high-end options for nightlife are usually happening.
• Lapa and Center have a lot of budget-friendly and alternative night scenes. Some of the best samba places are in these areas.
• Botafogo has an incredible concentration of all-night bars.

With all of these considered, I recommend staying in Botafogo if you are interested in nightlife. Botafogo’s location is the most optimal to give you the freedom to go anywhere in the South Zone and Center of Rio. With a short Uber ride, you can easily make it across the city at night and dance the night away.

I recommend spending at least 5 days in Rio. There is a lot to see in the city and I promise you won’t be bored.
