Basic information – Hiking Sugar Loaf vs. Urca Hill

First, let me clear something up: the Sugar Loaf is what we call this mountain complex you see in the picture above, but as you can see, it is made of two hills. The smaller one is called Urca Hill and the highest is Sugar Loaf Mountain.

We normally refer to the whole complex as Sugar Loaf, which can get a bit confusing for foreigners when organizing a trip to Rio.

There are two hiking options in the Sugar Loaf complex:

  1. Hike the Urca Hill – 45 min, considered easy
  2. Hike the Sugar Loaf Mountain – 2 hours, considered moderate + requires a stretch of rock climbing

Let’s cover each of the options in more detail.

Hiking Urca Hill in Rio de Janeiro

Urca Hill may not be as high as its bigger brother, but it still offers stunning views of Guanabara Bay, Christ the Redeemer statue, and the city of Rio. Urca Hill is also the first stop of the cable car.

The hike to Urca Hill is considered easy and is a nice alternative way to go up the mountain to see the views, instead of paying for the cable car.

The path starts at Pista Claudio Coutinho located on the left side of Praia Vermelha. You will see the start of the trail marked by a sign to your left, and the trail itself is quite well-marked. There is no need for a guide on this one.

The entire hike to Urca Hill is done through the forest, so there is a lot of shade. It can be a nice option for a hike to do in Rio even during hot summer days. If you are lucky, you can even spot some monkeys and special bird species native to the Atlantic Forest.

Details about the Urca Hill Hike

  • Starting point: Pista Claudio Coutinho
  • Duration: around 45 minutes, but depends on your pace
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Suitable for kids? Yes
  • Opening times: Even though this is not the opening time of the trail itself, we recommend starting before 4 pm because the gate at the top closes at 5 pm. If you get to the top after the gate is closed, you cannot get into Urca Hill and will have to go down without seeing the view.

Once you get up to Urca Hill, you can access the facilities without any fees but if you want to get the cable car down or up to the Sugar Loaf, you will have to pay the ticket from there. To go down, you can choose between hiking back the same trail or catching the cable car down to the starting point.

Hiking the Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio

The hike up the Sugar Loaf Mountain is longer and more difficult than the Urca Hill hike. The main difference from Urca Hill is that this one requires rock climbing in some parts.

This trail starts at Praia Vermelha as well, at Pista Claudio Coutinho. The difference is that to access this one, you should continue until the very end of Pista Claudio Coutinho, until you reach a sign that says “Beyond this point, you go at your own risk”. A fun way to start the trail, right?

We only recommend doing the Sugar Loaf Mountain hike in Rio with an experienced guide because you will need to use some rock climbing techniques and materials. This hike is not marked at all, so you need to know the way – and the best way to do this is by hiring a local guide.

We recommend this tour if you want to get a guide for hiking the Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio:

Details of the Sugar Loaf Mountain Hike

  • Starting point: Pista Claudio Coutinho
  • Altitude: 395 m
  • Length: 2.3 km
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Suitable for kids? Many tours accept kids from 10 years on

This hike will get you to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain, which is the final stop of the cable car. From there, you will have 360 views over Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara Bay. It is incredible!

With most guided tours, the way down will be done at your own pace as the descent will be via cable car. The ticket for the cable car is usually included in the price of the tour but we recommend checking this in detail with the company you decide to book.

How is the Sugar Loaf Mountain hike

The Sugar Loaf Mountain hike can be divided into three stretches – the start, the Costão do Pão de Açúcar, and the end. The middle section is where the rock climbing comes in, and the other two are regular trails.

As I’ve mentioned the start of the trail is not well marked but it is also not very hard to figure out which path to take if you just observe your surroundings. There aren’t any signs but it is not easy to get lost.

After a few minutes, you will get to the most challenging part of the path – the Costão do Pão de Açúcar. This is a vertical, 20-meter-high section where you will need the ropes to go through. It is because of this section that I don’t recommend attempting this hike alone unless you have good rock climbing experience.

If you book a tour like this one, your guide will set up the ropes and guide you through this section. If you like adventure, this can be quite a fun activity but I do not recommend it for anyone afraid of heights.

Once you conquered the rock climbing section, you have just a few minutes of the end section of the trail. This last part is quite easy and leads you straight to the summit of Sugar Loaf Mountain. You can enjoy all the facilities at the top and the incredible views around you.
