What is the best time of the year to visit Rio de Janeiro
Are you looking to plan a trip to Rio de Janeiro but you are struggling to figure out when is the best time of the year for a visit? I am here to help you out. As a person born and raised in Rio, you can trust that I have seen it all.
In this article, I will cover the best and worst times to visit Rio and give my personal advice on what I think is the best month for tourists to visit.

When is the high season in Rio?
The high season in Rio starts in late November and lasts until early March. Since Rio is in the southern hemisphere, the high season is during the summer months, with the peak months being December, January, and the week of Carnival (usually in February).
Summertime is the most popular time to visit Rio, and itβs also the busiest and most expensive season.
Temperatures are very high during this time of year, ranging between 25-35Β°C (77-95Β°F) on average – but they can go up to +40Β°C (104Β°F) on really hot days.

What is the rainy season in Rio?
If you try searching online for which is Rio’s rainy season, most websites will tell you that it is between summer/autumn, more specifically between the months of December and April.
As someone who has lived in Rio for most of her life, my answer is that the rainy months in Rio are usually March and April. In fact, we have a saying that says “as Γ‘guas de MarΓ§o” which translates into “the waters of March” referring to the rain.
That being said, it’s important to mention that during the entire summer, there are always thunderstorms and rainy days. Rio is a tropical destination after all. Even if you plan your holidays during the peak of summer, you can still count on a few grey days or an end-of-the-day storm.
The months with the least rain are definitely the winter months, between June and August. Winter is the season known for having the clearest days in Rio (which makes the best sunrises and sunsets!).

What is the cheapest time of the year to go to Rio?
If you are looking to save money on your trip, the best time to go to Rio is during the low season months, when prices tend to be lower. Generally speaking, this would be between April and June.
During the lower season, you will find more options of places to stay and be able to choose ones towards the most affordable end of the spectrum.
The thing to keep in mind about prices is that they can vary greatly depending on the type of accommodation you choose, as well as where you plan to stay.
One of the most expensive parts of the trip to Rio will be the flight ticket itself (if you will be coming from abroad). From my experience, the months with cheaper flight tickets from the USA to Rio are April and May. Flight ticket prices vary a lot year over year, so I advise you to not take my word for granted and put a price alert on a tool like Skyscanner.
If your main focus is to save money during your trip, you should definitely plan ahead and make sure you book in advance.

Main events happening in Rio throughout the year
No matter what season you decide to visit Rio, there are always great events happening throughout the year. Some of the main ones include:
– Carnival – the specific date changes every year but it is usually between February/March
– Festa Junina (translates into June Party, a season where we have events with typical foods and music from this specific theme party) – June & July
– Rock in Rio – the largest music festival that happens in Rio. It happens every two years, the next one being in 2024. The specific dates change every year but it is always between September/October
– New Year Party – December. Read more about how is it to spend New Year in Rio.
Besides these, there are always smaller events happening in Rio throughout the year. Trust me, you will not be bored.
Personal advice: What is the best time to visit Rio de Janeiro?
In my opinion, the best month to visit Rio is June.
In June, you have the perfect mix of the best parts of traveling to Rio. There are “Festa Junina” events happening everywhere, the city is not so full, prices are more accessible, there is less traffic, and the weather is amazing.
Especially if you will be traveling from the Northern Hemisphere as we do, there is essentially no temperature shock when traveling to Rio during the month of June.
We also love the fact that there is less national and international tourism this time of the year. Rio attracts not only people coming from abroad but a lot of Brazilian tourists as well. Since June is not a month filled with holidays or a typical vacation time in Brazil, national tourism is quite slow this time of the year.
