Šunik Water Grove in the Soča Valley, Slovenia
The Šunik Water Grove is not a place often mentioned on most travel guides and that is because it is still more of a hidden spot here in Slovenia.
In fact, the year 2024 was our first time going there, even though we have lived and traveled through Slovenia for over 5 years now.
Šunik is a beautiful walking path located in the Lepena Valley. In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to visit Šunik Water Grove.

About Šunik Water Grove: What makes it so special
Šunik is a little gorge formed where the Lepenjica and Šunik Streams meet. Together, they form a group of waterfalls, small cascades, and crystal-clear pools.
This area wasn’t really discovered until around 10 years ago, when the trail along the river was finally marked, including the addition of the suspended bridges.
What I really like about Šunik is that it is very quiet and secluded. The water grove is located in the middle of a dense part of the forest, within quite some distance from the busy parts of the Soča Valley.
People don’t tend to stumble on this place by accident because it is a bit out of the way. This makes it quite empty, like a little hidden paradise.
In fact, there are even some people who believe that the Šunik Water Grove has healing properties with the combination of the healing powers of the water and the entire environment around it.

Where is Šunik Water Grove located?
Šunik Water Grove is located in the Lepena Valley, which is part of the wider Soča Valley region. This is a beautiful area in the western side of Slovenia, part of the Triglav National Park.
The water grove extends for a few meters along the stream, but you can use this location for reference.
How to get to Šunik?
There are two ways to explore the Šunik Water Grove.
Option 1 – You can park here and just follow the trail along the water grove. The trail is a loop walk that will take you to both sides of the stream, along the main waterfalls and pools.
Option 2 – If you prefer to make it a longer walk, there is a 3 km trail starting near Camp Klin that will take you all the way to Šunik Water Grove.

Visiting Šunik Water Grove
As I have mentioned, this year was our first time visiting Šunik, and I can’t believe it took us so long to come here!
The place is stunning, and it has this incredible and calming energy to it. Granted, we went early in the morning, so we were practically alone the entire circuit.
I recommend wearing proper walking shoes when visiting Šunik because the path goes through the forest. It is very easy and suitable also for kids and families.
We parked the car in the parking lot I mentioned above and walked the circular trail along Šunik. It is very easy to follow and well-marked.
