How to get to Sugar Loaf Mountain from Copacabana?
Copacabana is located only 5 km away, so it is very easy to get to Sugar Loaf Mountain from there.
The fastest way to go from Copacabana to Sugar Loaf Mountain is by car or Uber. Without traffic, you will have a short 10-15 min ride.
The cheapest way to get to the Sugar Loaf Mountain is by bus. We recommend using Google Maps to see the exact bus options available depending on your location.
A great option is to get the subway to the Botafogo Station and, from there, hop on the connecting bus that goes to Urca. This bus will take you very close to Praia Vermelha, where the cable car station is located.

There are 4 different ways you can get up to the Sugar Loaf Mountain in Rio: by cable car, through a hike, climbing, or with a tour.
Below we will walk you through each of the options:
Visiting Sugar Loaf with the cable car
This is without a doubt the most popular way to visit the Sugar Loaf Mountain. There are two sections of it:
- Praia Vermelha – Urca (the smallest hill)
- Urca – Sugar Loaf (the highest mountain)
The cable car ride takes only 3 minutes for each section, it is a very short but fun ride. The cable car has large glass windows so you have an amazing view on the way (make sure to get a place by the window!).
Hiking to the Sugar Loaf
Another great alternative if you would like to combine the visit to the Sugar Loaf with outdoor activity is to hike your way up. The hike starts at Praia Vermelha, more specifically at the Pista Claudio Coutinho located on the left of the beach.
The hike to the Sugar Loaf is considered easy and it takes around 45 min if walking in an easy rhythm. There is no need for a guide, the path is very well-marked.
However, the hike takes you only to Urca Hill, the shortest of the mountains. If you want to visit the highest point, which is the Sugar Loaf Mountain itself, you need to get a second section of the cable car.
The hike is entirely free but you will have to pay for the cable car ride once you arrive at the top of Urca Hill. If you don’t want to continue with the cable car and decide to come back down through the hike, then you won’t have to pay a thing.
One thing worth mentioning is that there is a gate at the top of the hike that gives you access to the hill. This gate closes at 17h so we recommend starting the hike at 16h at the latest.

Climbing the Sugar Loaf Mountain

Sugar Loaf Mountain is one of the most famous rock climbing spots in Rio de Janeiro. For this option, we strongly recommend booking a tour with an experienced guide who will be able to guide you around and bring all the necessary equipment.
For going down the Sugar Loaf, most tours already offer the ticket included in the price so you can go down by cable car.

When is the best time to visit the Sugar Loaf?
The Sugar Loaf Mountain can be visited any time of the year. The most important thing is that you check the forecast and go up on a day with good weather.
If the sky is full of low clouds, you may not have any view from the top. We really recommend you try to save some flexibility on your schedule and book this tour only a day or two in advance, so you can check the forecast before you go.
As for the time of day, we recommend visiting the Sugar Loaf either in the early morning or late afternoon. The busiest time is during the middle of the day and early afternoon, so I would avoid those if you can.
Early morning provides a very good light for photography. It is fairly empty as most tourists tend to visit the Christ as early as possible so the Sugar Loaf tends to get more crowded towards late morning.
Late afternoons are my favorite time to visit Sugar Loaf Mountain because this is one the most beautiful spots to see the sunset in Rio de Janeiro. The sun sets behind Corcovado Mountain so you will see the golden glow illuminate the city below. It is magical.
Pro tip: Visiting the Sugar Loaf like the locals do it
Want to experience the Sugar Loaf as a true Carioca? Then after you come down from the cable car, you should go to Bar Urca for a beer and some snacks. If you will be visiting the Sugar Loaf during the weekend, the bar will probably be quite full.
This is one of the most popular places in town for an afternoon beer and meeting with friends. It is very informal, typical Rio style. You just order your beer and your snacks (we recommend the Pasteis or Empadas) and sit on the short wall, admiring the view of Guanabara Bay.
How much does it cost to visit the Sugar Loaf Mountain?
The cost of the Sugar Loaf cable car ticket is R$160 for adults (cca 33 USD). Children between 3-12 years old and elderly above 60 years pay half price, so their ticket would be R$80.
If you are in a hurry or don’t want to worry about the lines, you can also choose to purchase the cable car ticket that offers priority boarding.
If you hire a tour guide, they will usually include the entry ticket in their package so you don’t have to worry about it on site. Check this information in detail when you will be considering booking a tour.

I recommend buying the Sugar Loaf tickets online as it will save you time when queuing. Online tickets can be purchased on their website or on a tour platform such as Get Your Guide.
You can also purchase the Sugar Loaf cable car tickets at the ticket office when you arrive but please note that lines tend to get quite long during the day and especially on the weekends.
What to expect when visiting the Sugar Loaf Mountain
When you get to the Sugar Loaf top, you will be rewarded with one of the most spectacular views in all of Rio de Janeiro. To your left, you can enjoy the picturesque view of Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.
Right in front, you have the landscape of Corcovado Mountain with its world-famous Christ statue. And if you turn your head to the right, you will be able to see Guanabara Bay and Niteroi in the end.
You can stay as long as you want at the top, exploring all levels of observation decks.
Infrastructure
Sugar Loaf Mountain is one of the most well-structured tourist attractions in Rio, in my opinion. There are two observation docks, one at Urca Hill and the other at Sugar Loaf itself. We recommend spending time in both to take it all in.
There are ramps to make the space as accessible as possible for everyone.
In the area called “Espaço Baía de Guanabara”, you will find a small gastronomic center with options for places to eat and small shops.
There is also a part where you can see the previous versions of the cable car, including one of the original models that gave this attraction the popular name of “bondinho” in Portuguese.
Helicopter flight from the Sugar Loaf
Panoramic helicopter flights are incredibly popular in Rio de Janeiro. One of the places where you can get one of these flights is right here, at the top of the Sugar Loaf.
They offer different options of flights with itineraries starting from 7 minutes in duration.
In our opinion, this is not the best place to hop on a helicopter. If you are interested in a panoramic flight of Rio, we recommend this tour.
Where to stay near the Sugar Loaf Mountain?
If you are visiting Rio and want to stay close to Sugar Loaf Mountain, we recommend getting a hotel either in Botafogo or in Copacabana. The great thing about the Sugar Loaf is that it is extremely well located, in the best area of Rio.
Here are a few options for places to stay:
- Yoo2 Hotel – This is, in my opinion, one of the best hotels in Rio. The location is great for going around the city and they have an incredible rooftop bar.
- Aquarela do Leme – If you want a budget option, this is an amazing hostel recommendation. Located in Leme, it has a very chilled-back atmosphere and offers both private and shared rooms.
- Hotel Astoria Palace – With its famous rooftop pool facing the iconic Copacabana Beach, the Astoria Hotel is a great option for a place to stay if you are looking to combine comfort and a spotless location.
