How many days should you spend in Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul is one of the most fascinating cities I’ve ever visited. But because it’s a big city with so much to see, deciding how many days to spend in Istanbul can be tricky for first-time travelers.
I’ve been to Istanbul three times on trips of completely different lengths, so I’ve tested different stay durations to see what you can realistically do in each case.
In this guide, I’ll explain how many days are worth spending in Istanbul and how much of the city you can cover within that time.
Spoiler alert: In my opinion, you should plan for at least 3 full days to cover the basics of Istanbul!
Important Tip: To make your trip easier, I recommend buying the Istanbul ePass, which gives you access to the city’s main attractions (except Hagia Sophia). The biggest advantage of this pass is that you can skip the lines — a must in Istanbul!
What’s the ideal number of days to spend in Istanbul?
Picking the ideal length for a trip to Istanbul is a challenge because this city has so many things to do that you could easily spend a full week there, discovering new places every day.
There are two important factors to consider when planning your time in Istanbul:
- Because Istanbul is a very large city, getting around takes time. Staying too far from the central neighborhoods is a bad idea (read our where to stay in Istanbul guide).
- Some of Istanbul’s attractions are so big that a visit can take hours. For example, Hagia Sophia – one of the city’s top sights – can easily take an entire morning, as the lines are often huge.
With all that in mind, for a first visit, you should stay for at least 3 full days in Istanbul.
In that time, you can see several of the main attractions (not all of them), spend a day on Istanbul’s Asian side, and take a Bosphorus boat tour at sunset.
Three days will give you a great introduction to the city.
If you want to visit all the main sights, though, three days won’t be enough. In that case, plan for 5–7 days.

Tip: Pay attention to your travel dates
Turkey is a Muslim-majority country, so they have specific religious holidays and observances. It’s very important to check the calendar for the exact dates of your trip.
For example, traveling to Istanbul during Ramadan is a very different experience because during this religious period, many places will be closed. The dates for Ramadan change every year, so double-check when planning your trip.
Another key point is that many religious attractions, like mosques, close during prayer times, so you need to organize your itinerary smartly to schedule visits at the right time. You won’t be able to visit the main mosques during prayer.

To help you plan, here’s a complete 3-day itinerary for Istanbul that also includes plenty of ideas if you’ll stay longer.

What to do if you have more days in Istanbul
Having more than three days in Istanbul is a privilege, not a problem!
As I said, the city has so much to offer that you won’t get bored.
I’d say you can easily spend 5 to 7 days in Istanbul without repeating any attractions, if you want.
If you’ll stay more than 3 days, beyond visiting the main sights, I recommend enjoying things like:
- Sampling different versions of the Turkish breakfast – it’s delicious!
- Joining a food tour in Istanbul
- Watching the sunset from a rooftop bar
- Seeing a whirling dervish performance
- Visiting the incredible Dolmabahçe Palace

Is it worth staying fewer than 3 days in Istanbul?
If you have only 1 or 2 days, you’ll see very little of Istanbul.
In most cases, people with just 1 or 2 days are in transit and have a long layover in the city. That’s very common because the Istanbul Airport is one of the largest in the world, so it’s a major flight hub.
If that’s your situation, since you’ll have very limited time, I recommend not spending it entering attractions. The goal is to get a taste of Istanbul and use the time to see the city’s main areas: stroll the streets, admire the mosques from the outside, wander through the Grand Bazaar, and so on.
1-day layover in Istanbul
A 1-day layover in Istanbul on long-haul flights operated by Turkish Airlines is very common – we even did this on our trip to Bali.
If your flight is with Turkish Airlines and your layover is at least 6 hours, you’re eligible for a free guided tour of central Istanbul offered by Turkish Airlines.
I highly recommend taking it. The route isn’t anything too special, but it’s free and gives you a first feel for the city, so why not?
The tour includes a few stops on a walking route through the center, passing by mosques and the Grand Bazaar, and ends with dinner (yes, the meal is free too!).
Round-trip transportation to the airport is included as well, so it’s worth it.

Best time to visit Istanbul
Istanbul is one of those destinations you can visit any time of year because there’s always something happening.
I particularly recommend visiting in spring or fall, when the weather is milder.
Summer (especially June and August) can be very hot, which makes waiting in lines or walking around less pleasant. The first time I visited was in peak July, and I remember we had to stop all the time for drinks because it was so hot.
Winter (December to February) can be quite cold, too, because Istanbul gets a lot of wind due to its geography.
This year, we visited Istanbul in May and loved it. Early June is also a great period to visit. Read more about the best months to visit Istanbul.
