Best Time to Visit Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul is Turkey’s biggest and one of the most fascinating cities we’ve ever visited. But what many travelers don’t realize is that a trip to Istanbul changes a lot depending on the time of year.
Winter in Istanbul feels completely different from summer in Istanbul.
I’ve been to Istanbul three times in different seasons, so I’ve experienced almost all types of weather there. In this guide, I’ve gathered all my tips on when to visit Istanbul, including my recommendation for the best months to travel. I hope it helps you plan your trip!
When to Go to Istanbul: The Best Months to Visit
Istanbul is a city you can visit all year round—there’s always something to see and do—but some months are better than others.
The best months to visit Istanbul are May and September.
These months have the best conditions for exploring the city. The weather is pleasant—not too hot, not too cold—perfect for a big, walkable city like Istanbul.
They’re also part of the shoulder season, so the city isn’t as crowded as during peak months, meaning you’ll face shorter lines at major attractions.
That doesn’t mean the city will be empty! Istanbul is never empty, but during the high season, it gets extremely crowded, so I recommend avoiding July and August.
To give you a better idea of what to expect throughout the year, here’s what each season in Istanbul is like.
Summer in Istanbul
Summer in Istanbul runs officially from June to September, but July and August are the hottest months, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C daily.
Because Istanbul is a large city full of buildings and avenues, those temperatures can be quite high to truly enjoy the city. Plus, Istanbul is very hilly, so walking all day in that heat isn’t for everyone!
Summer is considered high season in Istanbul. The city gets packed, but on the bright side, there are lots of events happening—creating a fun, lively atmosphere that’s quite different from other times of the year.
The first time we traveled to Turkey was in July. Although we loved the trip itself, I told myself afterward that I wouldn’t go back at that time again. It was so hot that public transport had an unpleasant smell, and we constantly needed breaks just to escape the heat for a bit.
It’s also worth noting that Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country, so you’ll need to wear modest clothing to visit mosques and religious sites. Especially for women, I recommend bringing a scarf to cover up in those places.
Winter in Istanbul

Winter in Istanbul runs from December to March, though it usually starts getting cold in November.
Many people don’t realize this, but it’s actually common for it to snow in Istanbul. It’s usually light snow that doesn’t accumulate much, but it shows that winters can be cold!
If you’re traveling to Istanbul in winter, it’s worth investing in good warm clothing.
On the other hand, this is a relatively quieter time to visit (except for holiday dates, of course).
Spring and Autumn in Istanbul
Spring in Istanbul runs from March to May, and autumn from September to November—these are considered shoulder seasons.
The temperatures are milder during this time. The weather warms up from May through early June and remains pleasant in September (at the end of summer). That’s why I consider this the best time to travel to Istanbul.
Because these are shoulder seasons, the city isn’t as crowded as in summer, making it great for sightseeing. Istanbul is very walkable, so this really matters!
Pro tip: Avoid visiting on the 1st and 2nd of May, it’s a public holiday in many countries in the region, and Istanbul will be packed during this period.

SafetyWing Travel Insurance

We know that insurance is one of those things that we think we don’t need… until we actually do! We recommend SafetyWing, they have very flexible insurance plans covering almost every destination in the world! Take a look at their options and prices below.
What’s the Cheapest Time to Visit Istanbul?
Some of the most affordable months in Istanbul are May, April, and October.
These months are the low season in the city, meaning prices tend to drop. So if your goal is to save money, they’re great options.
Major Holidays in Istanbul
Beyond picking the best month to visit, it’s also important to choose your travel dates carefully. As a predominantly Muslim country, Turkey might have different holidays then the rest of Europe.
The timing matters because during holidays, many establishments are closed.
Some of the most important holidays in Istanbul include:
- 31/12 – New Year’s Day
- Ramadan – the main Muslim religious holiday (dates vary each year)
- 23/04 – National Independence and Children’s Day
- 01/05 – Labor Day
- 19/05 – Atatürk Commemoration Day
- 30/08 – Victory Day
Pro tip: I don’t recommend arriving in Istanbul on the exact day of a public holiday. Try to arrive a day before or after. On my last trip, we arrived during Labor Day (May 1st) and everything was closed. A large part of the city was blocked to traffic, and it took us 2.5 hours from the airport to our hotel—a ride that usually takes 45 minutes.
Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Time to Visit Istanbul
- The main attractions in Istanbul stay open year-round.
- Don’t underestimate the summer heat in Istanbul!
- Accommodation prices can vary significantly depending on the time of year. The most expensive months are usually July and August, and during holidays.
- Check which days of the week you’ll be in Istanbul when planning your itinerary. For example, mosques usually close for prayer around noon on Fridays, so schedule your visits accordingly.
- Istanbul is a popular layover destination because Turkish Airlines uses it as a major hub. If you’re visiting Istanbul only for a short stopover, you can go at almost any time of year.

How Many Days to Spend in Istanbul?
In my opinion, Istanbul deserves at least three full days, but you could easily spend a full week and still find new things to do.
