Visiting the port city of Koper (Slovenia) for a day
Koper is the largest city on the Slovenian seaside and a popular entry point for tourists who travel with cruise ships.
Even though it is larger than the other Slovenian coastal cities, all the historic hotspots are located in the Old Town, which is fairly small. You can easily visit the best places in Koper within a day with time to spare.
We have lived and traveled through Slovenia for over 5 years now, so we have been to Koper countless times already. In this guide, I put together the things you should do in Koper to make the most of your day in the city.
What to do in a day in Koper
Let me start by giving you a bit of information about Koper that I think will help you understand the beauty of this city.
One of the most special things about Koper is that here you can clearly see the mix between Italian and Slovenian influence that is present across the entire seaside region.
Back in the day, Koper was part of the Venetian Republic, which is why you will see so many buildings with Italian architecture and symbols of the Venetian Republic all around.
Almost every sign in town is written in both Slovenian and Italian languages. Even the city name is also written in both versions: Koper (Slovenian) and Capodistria (Italian).
Besides this rich historical background, Koper is also very important for Slovenia nowadays because it is home to the only international cargo port in the country, which plays a crucial role in international trade.

Now that you already have a picture of the importance and background of Koper, let’s start with our suggested itinerary:
Walk through the Muda Gate
The Muda Gate is the only original gate still standing in the city of Koper.
Back in the day, Koper used to be a fortified town located on an island. There used to be 12 different entry portals similar to this one, but the Muda Gate has always been considered the main one because this is where the bridge was located.
You can walk through the gate into the square PreΕ‘ernov trg, or pass through the side door.
Check out Da Ponte Fountain
One of the main highlights of PreΕ‘ernov trg is the fountain located on the opposite side of it.
Da Ponte Fountain is an interesting spot because it’s not just an average fountain. When Koper was still an island, it was used as a subaquatic aqueduct to move drinkable water into the city.
The fountain has been renovated since then and is still in great condition. It is definitely a spot worth checking out when visiting Koper for a day.
Walk up Δevljarska ulica
Next, walk towards Δevljarska ulica, one of my favorite streets in town.
This is one of the busiest streets in the Old Town of Koper, with many stores, cafes, and local businesses. As you walk through it, you will already see the tower of Koper Bell Tower rising at the end, which is our next stop.
Δevljarska ulica ends right on Tito Square.
Explore the magnificent Tito Square
Tito Square is the main square in Koper, and it’s a beautiful one!
This square is surrounded by four of the most important buildings in the city:
- Cathedral of the Assumption and the Bell Tower
- Praetorian Palace
- Loggia Palace
- Armory and Foresteria Palace
If you pay close attention, you will see that this square is one of the strongest examples of Italian architecture in Koper. Two of the buildings even feature the winged lion statue, which was the symbol of the Republic of Venice.

Cathedral of the Assumption and the Bell Tower
Cathedral of the Assumption, also known as Koper Cathedral, is the main church in Koper and one of the most important places to visit in the Old Town.
The church you see today is the sixth church built in this same exact place, and it is known as one of the largest churches in Slovenia.
You can visit the church for free (I highly recommend checking out the inside), but you will have to pay a small fee to climb up the bell tower.
On the top of the tower, there is a lookout platform where you can have panoramic views of the entire city below. The view is worth the effort to climb the 204 steps.
Cool fact: The bell tower is also famous for hosting the oldest bell in Slovenia, dating back to 1333 – and it’s still working!
Loggia Palace
This is the most beautiful building in the square, in my opinion (possibly even the most beautiful in Koper).
The Loggia Palace is a Gothic Palace whose features resemble the Doge Palace in Venice.
One important feature of the building is the small statue of the Virgin Mary with child located in the left corner. The statue was added in the XVI century after the city was hit by a devastating plague.
The first floor of the palace is a beautiful cafe that opened its doors in the middle of the XIX century, making it the oldest cafe in Slovenia.
I highly recommend stopping here for a coffee or a drink. It’s a lovely spot!
Praetorian Palace
On the opposite side of the Loggia Palace is the Praetorian Palace, used today as the tourist information center, mayor’s office, and conference room for municipal council meetings.
There is also a reconstructed pharmacy and wedding venue here!
You can visit the building interior on guided tours – admission costs 5,00 β¬/person. The guided tours happen at 11 am and 3 pm, but they have to be arranged beforehand.
Visit the cruise port
One of the main reasons Koper gets full during the summer season is that it is a popular stop on cruises that are traveling through the Adriatic Sea.
The best place to check out the cruise port is from the Belvedere Viewpoint, where the picture above was taken.
From here, you can also see the large container ships in the background. As I mentioned at the start, Koper has the main cargo port in Slovenia.
If you are coming to Koper on a cruise ship, you can easily explore the city within a day because the cruise port is located right in the Old Town, one street away from the main square.
Walk down KidriΔeva ulica
To start heading down towards the promenade, I suggest walking through KidriΔeva ulica. This is one of the main streets in Koper and it’s a beautiful one!
You will see a lot of colorful houses (some of them needing a little restoration, but still beautiful) and a few hidden churches along the way.
I also like that this street is a bit quieter than others because there are not as many businesses here and it is not so narrow.
Have a drink at Carpaccio Square and check out the Taverna
Once you make it to the end of KidriΔeva ulica, you will find yourself at Carpaccio Square (Carpacciov trg in Slovenian).
This is one of my favorite squares in Koper. It’s small, but with a few local restaurants that make a really great vibe for a drink or aperitivo at the end of the day.
On one side of the square, you will see the structure of The Taverna, an old salt storehouse that was restored and is now used as an event place.
If you will be spending the evening in Koper, check out if there will be any concerts or events happening here. They are quite popular during the summer.
Pro tip: The view from the port from inside the Taverna is really beautiful. The stone arches work as a great frame.
Walk along the Koper promenade
On the left side, you will see the beautiful Koper promenade, a long walkable path that leads all the way to the Parenzana.
Parenzana is a cycling path that connects several cities of the Slovenian seaside. If you will be visiting Koper during a day with good weather, you can rent a bike and cycle all the way to Izola or Strunjan, for example. It’s a lovely ride.
The Koper promenade is very lively during the day. You will often see street artists playing music, young people rollerblading and families walking around. It’s a lovely part of town.

Eat fresh seafood at the market
We can’t really talk about visiting the seaside without eating good, fresh seafood.
Most restaurants in Koper will have seafood options on the menu, so you have a lot of great restaurants to choose from!
The last time we were in Koper, we found this little shop located by the market that serves only seafood and it’s super fresh. It’s called Fritolin.
It’s a really small shop with only 3 tables outside and a handful of dishes based on what they have available. But the food is amazing! I highly recommend it.
Go to the beach
Since we are exploring the seaside, make sure you also save time to spend some time at the beach!
I will be honest and say that Koper is not my favorite beach destination in Slovenia because of the proximity to the port, but the beaches here are very popular and get full during the summer.

Visiting Koper for a day from a cruise ship
If you are coming to Koper for a day during a stop on a cruise ship, the best way to explore the town is on foot.
As I mentioned, the cruise port is very centrally located, so you can follow the itinerary we proposed above to visit the best spots in Koper.
If you decide not to visit the museums, you can follow the entire itinerary comfortably in half a day. The Old Town of Koper is quite small, so you can walk around in just a few hours.
With the leftover time, I recommend doing a half-day trip from Koper. Keep reading to discover my favorite ones in the next section.
Ideas of day trips from Koper
Here are my favorite day trips from Koper:
- Marezige: This little wine fountain located on a hill overlooking the seaside is a beautiful quick trip from Koper. A visit to Marezige would take only a couple of hours and I recommend going at sunset time, if possible.
- Izola: The next town on the seaside and one of my favorite beach places in Slovenia. The beach here in Izola is quite large and with a lot of shade, so it’s perfect to spend the day.
- Moon Bay: The most beautiful beach in Slovenia, you will need to walk through a short trail to get there but it’s worth it!
- PortoroΕΎ: One of the largest cities on the Slovenian seaside. It has a good beach for kids because it is quite large and shallow, but the city itself doesn’t have much to do besides the beach.
- Piran: The most picturesque city on the seaside. The Old Town is beautiful! It’s also a great place to watch the sunset.
- Postojna Cave: This is Slovenia’s largest cave and one of my favorite attractions in the country because it is so unique. A trip from Koper to Postojna Cave would take only half a day. PS: Add a stop at Predjama Castle as well!
- Ε kocjan Caves: Another stunning cave system, a little less touristy than Postojna but just as impressive. A trip here would also take you half a day only.
- Go paddleboarding on the seaside
Getting to and around Koper
The Old Town of Koper is mostly closed to traffic, so the best way to explore it is on foot. So, if you will be coming on a cruise ship or a tour, you don’t need to worry about transport within the city itself.
If you will be coming to Koper from another city, these are the best transport options into town:
- By car: We highly recommend renting a car for your trip to Slovenia because it will give you the freedom to explore. If you do, there is a really large parking lot located right next to the Old Town – find the location here.
Do you need to rent a car for your trip?

Where to stay in Koper
If you will be spending a day or two in Koper, the best thing to do is get an accommodation as close as possible to the Old Town. This is where all the interesting spots are located and also where you’ll find the best restaurants.
Here are my recommendations for places to stay in Koper:
- Hotel Grand Koper: One of the main hotels in Koper, with an amazing location. If you can, get a room with a sea view and you’ll wake up with a view of the marina and the Adriatic Sea. It’s stunning!
- Apartments Porta Maggiore: If you prefer staying at an apartment, this is a great option. The apartments have a great location and there is parking very close to it.
Pro tip: If you will be visiting Koper with a car, make sure you get an accommodation that either has parking included, or has public parking nearby. Parking in Koper can be quite expensive so it helps a lot if the accommodation has a solution provided.
What is the best time to visit Koper?
The high season in Koper is during the summer because it is the best time to enjoy the seaside and the beaches. The months of July and August are the peak season, but the city tends to be full between June and September.
If you will be coming during this time of the year, please consider that it gets very hot here! It’s a great time to spend a day at the beach, but it can be a bit too hot to be walking around the city.
However, cruise ships still come to Koper as late as October or November.
I personally like visiting Koper in the shoulder seasons, such as early June or late September/October.
I find it much more pleasant because the city is a bit more empty, but the weather is very nice to explore and walk around.

Is Koper worth visiting?
Absolutely, yes!
Koper is a city with a lot of history and a great place to see the Italian influence in the region. I love wandering around the streets of the Old Town, it feels like going back in time.
Koper is also a great destination for eating local seafood dishes. Because of its central location, you can use it as a base for exploring other destinations in the Slovenian Seaside.
How many days do you need in Koper?
You can visit the main attractions in Koper within less than one day. You might need longer if you want to visit the museums, but on average, I would say it takes half a day to really walk around the entire Old Town and visit the best spots outlined here.
This is why Koper is a great stop for a cruise ship trip!
However, if you want to explore more destinations by the seaside and spend time by the beach, I recommend extending your stay for a day or two.
Is Koper walkable from the cruise port?
Yes, the cruise port in Koper is very centrally located. You can walk around the entire Old Town easily once you come out of the cruise ship.
Is there a hop-on hop-off bus in Koper?
Yes, there is a hop-on hop-off bus that stops in Koper and takes you to other cities of the Slovenian seaside. If you will be visiting Koper for only a day on a cruise ship, this can be a good option.
Just to be clear: the hop-on hop-off bus is not meant to explore Koper itself because the Old Town is small and there is no need for transport. The hop-on hop-off bus will take you from Koper to Izola, PortoroΕΎ, and Piran. You can read more about it here.
