Hiking to Mt Viševnik in Slovenia

Slovenia has over 300 peaks higher than 2000 meters and Mt Viševnik is one of the easiest ones to reach.

It has some of the most incredible views I’ve seen when hiking here in Slovenia. The top of Mt Viševnik is literally a viewpoint to Mt Triglav!

We have lived and traveled in Slovenia for over 5 years now, and it is our mission to share more about our country with you. In this article, we’ll tell you everything about hiking Mt Viševnik.

  • Elevation gain: 700 m

  • Difficulty: Technically easy, but demanding (steep trail)

  • Best time to hike: Between June and September

Starting point for the Viševnik Hike

There are a few possible route options to hike Mt Viševnik, but the most popular and easiest one is from Rudno Polje.

Rudno Polje is a small ski station accessible from the Pokljuka Plateau. To get there, you need to follow the signs to Pokljuka from Bled. This beautiful mountain road will take you up, all the way to the ski station.

Having this parking lot at 1.300 meters is a great thing because you already start your Viševnik hike at a higher altitude, making the climb shorter.

The parking at Rudno Polje is normally busy because this is also a popular starting point for hiking to Mt Triglav.

Pro tip: Once you arrive, there is a large military parking which is free. Down the road, the official parking is paid and costs € 7 per day.

Viševnik Hike – The trail

The Viševnik hike is quite easy to follow, so you won’t need a guide. At the end of the parking lot, look for the sign on your right that points to Triglav/Viševnik.

The first crossroad will be at the end of the road, where there are two old huts (as of 2024, they are not operational). Take the right on a path that goes through the forest.

Once you reach the first ski lift, you will see that the path has been adapted to follow through the ski lift slope and not through the forest anymore. Just follow the marcations.

At the end of the cable cars, the path starts getting steeper as you climb through a rocky trail. The field is filled with wild flowers and you will have the view to the Pokljuka valley behind you.

This first half of the trail is steep and rocky

On the top of this stretch, you will see the sign pointing left to Viševnik marking 1h left. A bit ahead, you will suddenly reach a green saddle. There are no marks at this part but continue to your right.

This second half of the hike is quite straightforward. You will be climbing on a more open part of the trail, which can get very windy depending on the weather.

Once you reach the top of the ridge, the views will open up!

To hike back, follow the same path.

Best time of the year to do the Viševnik Hike

The period between June and September is the best time of the year to hike to Mt Viševnik.

During the other months of the year, it is quite common to find snow at the top because Mt Viševnik has over 2.000 meters.

However, since the hike to the top of Viševnik is not long, many people do this hike during the winter as well. I only recommend this if you have experience with hiking during the winter and thoroughly check the conditions beforehand.

For beginner hikers, I don’t recommend going to Viševnik during the winter.

Where to stay near Viševnik?

One of the best things about the Viševnik Hike is how accessible it is – and this includes the large number of accommodation options only a short drive away!

I recommend staying around Lake Bohinj for this experience, but you can also stay in Bled or Ribno. The Pokljuka Plateau will be only a short drive away from either of these options.

Here are my recommended accommodations in the area:

  • Hotel Bohinj: One of the absolute best hotels around Lake Bohinj. I absolutely love the design of the hotel and they are very well-located!
  • Ribno Alpine Hotel: The first zero-waste hotel in Slovenia! What I like about this place is that it is located in a quieter area, but still easily reachable for all the hiking and exploring around Bled and Bohinj.
  • Garden Village Lake Bled: My favorite glamping place near Lake Bled. This place is a dream, with incredible treehouses.
